Dubai Hamburg Business Forum

The topic of digitalisation was in the focus of this year’s delegation trip to Dubai. The fifth Dubai Hamburg Business Forum (DHBF), organized by our Hamburg Chamber and the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry took place March 20-24, 2016.

Innovation to Connect – The Internet of Things

Under the theme of “The Internet of Things – Innovation to Connect” the fifth Dubai Hamburg Business Forum took place on 22 March, 2016. Speakers from both cities discussed the potential of digitalisation in different panel topics with focuses on energy, health care, urban living and logistics. A total of 112 participants were present at this forum, including 25 delegates from Hamburg.

The delegation trip included besides the one-day conference DHBF a delegation dinner and four site visits. This delegation trip to Dubai offered the participants the great opportunity to mix and mingle with company representatives from the United Arab Emirates.

You can find the programme available for download here (PDF). The topics of the fifth Dubai Hamburg Business Forum were:

Public Sector Solutions for Smart Urban Living

The panel discussed the process that each of the two cities is undergoing in their quest to maximise the benefits of digitisation in all aspects of urban living.  While first success is clearly visible in both regions, the conversation aims to uncover areas where further efficiency can be achieved as well as to highlight how private sector companies can get involved in the process.

Smart Logistics

The strategic location and strong logistical infrastructure have elevated both Hamburg and Dubai to key trading hubs in their respective regions. The session covered the latest sector updates with a special focus on how the Internet of Things (IoT) has streamlined and could further restructure operations within the area of Maritime and Port Logistics.

Smart Health

Although the healthcare sector has been attributed high growth potential, horizontally as well as vertically, digitisation has happened so far at a slower pace than in many other industries. The discussion explored how existing applications in this field can be enhanced further and where additional “smart” services can be introduced.

Smart Energy

With Dubai following the Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 and Hamburg the “New 4.0” Industry initiative, both cities are aiming to develop a more sustainable and diversified energy supply. The session introduced innovative projects on both sides, highlighting opportunities for companies to get involved as well as room for further product development.

Interview with H.E. Hisham Al Shirawi, 2nd Vice Chairman, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Congratulations on hosting the Expo2020 in Dubai. What are the plans of Dubai for this unique opportunity?
“Thank you. We are delighted to have won the chance to host this incredible event. It is anticipated that Expo will generate around 277,000 jobs, attract 25 million visitors, and add $23 billion to Dubai’s economy. The sectors which will gain the most in the run up to and during Expo are trade, tourism, leisure and hospitality and construction and real estate. New hotels, roads, offices and a large convention centre are planned for the Expo site. This will be called Dubai Trade Centre Jebel Ali and will be spread across 438 hectares on a previously undeveloped area, so it is integral to the city’s wider urban development strategy. Not only will this site help further integrate the Al Maktoum Airport and Dubai Logistics Corridor, it will boost aviation, logistics and transport sectors. An indirect benefit of Expo will also be the boost in business and consumer confidence. We have seen optimism amongst business leaders in our quarterly survey increase throughout the year. Currently optimism and confidence levels are high and this is generally very good for business. In the short-term I think this optimism will continue in 2014 and we look forward to another successful year ahead.”
What is the role of DCCI in the Expo2020 planning?
“Dubai Chamber had a strong role as part of the Expo bid process and our role moving forward is to represent and engage the private sector in its enactment. Public-private partnerships will have a role to play in Expo and the development of Dubai’s economy moving forward. Dubai Chamber’s mission is to represent, support and protect the interests of the business community in Dubai and we will work to encourage its positive involvement and participation in Expo. Another objective for Dubai Chamber is to promote Dubai as an international business hub and Expo has made our job that bit easier because of the great publicity Dubai received around the world and the sheer number of business opportunities that are going to come out of it.”
What opportunities do you see for Hamburg-based companies in the realization of Dubai's Expo blueprint?
"Expo will provide added incentive to Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai Logistics Corridor and Jebel Ali port. Dubai’s trade, transport, logistics, maritime and aviation sectors will accelerate because of its impact and these are where Dubai has strong cooperation with Hamburg. During the Dubai-Hamburg Business Forum discussions focused on the two cities as aviation hubs and how we can together shape the future maritime industry. Expo has a major role to play and I look forward to all the new opportunities it is going to create for Dubai and our global partners, including Hamburg. Hamburg also has considerable strength in green technologies and sustainability is a major focus for Expo. This is an area where Hamburg’s expertise could come into play as part of Dubai’s realisation of the Expo blueprint.”
